Servicing Mid Canterbury – Greg Donaldson Contracting, Contracting you can trust

The story of Greg Donaldson Contracting

Greg Donaldson Contracting Ltd (GDC) has proudly served the Ashburton District and Mid Canterbury region for over 30 years. Founded by Greg Donaldson, the company began as a one-man operation with just a truck and a loader, driven by a passion for machinery and a vision to deliver top-quality contracting services. Today, that vision lives on stronger than ever.

GDC has now grown into a thriving family-run company with nearly 50 skilled staff and a modern fleet of over 150 plant and equipment, proudly providing a wide range of services, including civil works, siteworks, demolition, directional drilling, utility detection, and rural land development.

At the heart of the business is the Donaldson family. Greg remains actively involved and now works alongside his three sons— Michael, now the General Manager, oversees all contracting operations. Lane, a qualified mechanic, manages the in-house workshop. Blake leads the Directional Drilling Company (DDC), overseeing rig operations and drilling projects. Together, they carry on the company’s legacy of innovation, hard work, and dedication to the community.

It’s our incredible staff that have allowed Greg Donaldson Contracting to grow and become Ashburton’s leading Contracting company. At GDC, we are proud of our people, our history, and the role we play in building and supporting the region we call home.

Directional Drilling Company NZ Limited (DDC)

Greg purchased his first drill in 2005.  Today DDC have a Ditchwitch JT30 and a Ditchwitch 922.

The Drilling Company operates in the wider Canterbury region completing power, irrigation and fibre work in some of the most testing conditions and is well known for its own designed tooling that helps complete these projects.

They still have a “can do” approach to the trying ground conditions.

Utility Detection Services (UDS)

(a division of Greg Donaldson Contracting Limited)

With the cost to repair damage to existing services, along with danger to people in the surrounding area, it is important to ensure that existing underground services such as power and fibre are identified and located.

Quite often there are no plans available of existing services, which is where UDS personnel can assist to locate/identify these by using up to date ground penetration radar and location equipment.  This work can be undertaken in urban, rural and private property.
